The Belgian Lore Langendries, designer and artist of special jewellery and objects in which animal hair plays a leading role, will also give a lecture on Sunday May 27, at 12.30. She talks about her research interests such as the interaction between manual and industrial work, her fascination for tactile and physical, the behaviour of materials and digital technology. Among other things, she makes jewellery from residual material from animal skins. With Tableskin she won the Henry van de Velde Award 2017. For this purpose she translated a photo of a deer coat into a jacquard woven linen tablecloth. The designer plays with strokeability and repulsiveness: with the matching napkin you actually wipe your mouth off on deer hair.

Teresa van Dongen
Teresa van Dongen will give a lecture on Sunday 27 May matching the sub-theme Prevent. The multi-award winning designer is known for her lighting designs titled: Ambio, One Luminous Dot or Spark of Life. developed together with scientists, Lamps that do not need electricity or a light source but algae or electrochemical active bacteria that provide the lighting. “Consumers make a conscious choice when buying my sustainable products. After all, you have to take care of the bacterial population in your lamp, just like a plant,” she says. The designer makes us think about nature and scarce energy sources, and offers us an alternative.

Not many designers experiment in such a progressive, idiosyncratic and sustainable way within the world of LED lighting as VANTOT does. Also during Designday Sam van Gurp and Esther Jongsma make us think about a world in which plugs and pears no longer play a role but LED or solar cells.
VANTOT’s Eindhoven-based designers graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven only three years ago, but you can now call them fully-fledged lighting experts. In their innovative and often poetic designs, the designers show electrical components in full glory; they are an integral part of the design and not hidden away in boxes or thick insulated cables. In this way, they deal with the negative connotation attached to current: in VANTOT’s designs, you can touch it without risk.
